Loading Dock Door Sizes
Most loading dock doors are 9 ft. wide by 10 ft. high. A 9 ft. width fits standard 8 ft. 6 in. trailers and lets you center the truck. A 10 ft. height fits high cube trailers and sea containers, so you can load from floor to ceiling. Older docks are usually 8 x 8 or 8 x 10. Source: Blue Giant dock door size guide.
How To Measure A Dock Opening
You need a tape measure to measure a dock. From inside the building, measure the inches, take note of the numbers, and add them to your quote form.
- A. Width: Measure jamb to jamb at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening. Use the largest number.
- B. Height: Measure from the dock floor to the underside of the header. If the floor slopes, measure both sides.
- C. Headroom: Measure from the top of the opening to the ceiling or the lowest thing in the way, such as a pipe, light, beam, or door track. The coiled door sits here.
- D. Side Room: Measure the clear wall on each side. The guides go here, plus the chain hoist or motor on one side.
